Northrup Falls at Colditz Cove
One of Tennessee’s most beautiful hidden waterfalls — a 60-foot cascade inside Colditz Cove State Natural Area near Allardt. The trail is a peaceful 1.3 miles each way through oak-hickory forest, and uniquely, you can walk behind the falls. The surrounding cove also contains sandstone cliffs used as shelter by indigenous people more than 3,000 years ago. Best visited in spring or after heavy rain for peak flow.
Slave Falls & Needle Arch
A 60-foot waterfall pouring over the lip of one of the largest rock shelters in Big South Fork — the natural amphitheater effect is extraordinary. Add a short 0.25-mile detour to Needle Arch, a razor-thin ribbon of sandstone stretched between cliff faces, and you have two remarkable geological features on one easy hike. Start at the Sawmill Trailhead off Fork Ridge Road, accessed via Hwy 154 north of Jamestown. Note that the falls may reduce significantly in dry seasons.
Fall Branch Falls
Best experienced as part of the John Litton Farm Loop — widely regarded as one of the finest hikes in all of Big South Fork. Fall Branch Falls tumbles through a narrow gorge framed by massive hemlocks and dramatic sandstone formations. The surrounding forest is lush year-round. The full loop also takes you through a preserved 19th-century mountain farmstead with original structures still standing. Start at Bandy Creek Visitor Center.

Cell service is unreliable throughout Big South Fork and non-existent in most gorges. Download AllTrails, Gaia GPS, or the NPS app maps for offline use before you leave Jamestown. The Bandy Creek Visitor Center also has free paper maps.
Wear Waterproof Boots
Rock near waterfalls is perpetually wet and slippery even on dry days. Waterproof trail shoes or hiking boots with grip are essential — especially at Northrup Falls where you walk behind the cascade. Sandals and sneakers will get soaked and put you at risk.
Best Light for Photos
Waterfalls photograph best on overcast days — direct sunlight creates harsh shadows in canyon gorges. Mornings in spring give you the best combination of light, water flow, and wildflowers. Golden hour doesn’t reach most canyon floors.
Visit After Rain
Northrup Falls and Slave Falls can slow to a trickle or completely disappear in late summer and fall during dry spells. Visit within 2–3 days of significant rainfall for the most dramatic flow. Fall Branch Falls tends to hold water better year-round.
Wildlife Awareness
Black bears are present in Big South Fork. Store all food in your vehicle or a bear canister — never leave food unattended at a trailhead. You’re far more likely to see deer, turkey, and box turtles, but take bear precautions seriously.
Stock Up in Jamestown
There are no services near any of these trailheads — no gas, no food, no facilities (except at Bandy Creek). Fill your tank, pack water and snacks, and use the restroom in Jamestown before heading out. The drive to Big South Fork is scenic but remote.

Most of them end up asking what land costs. Fentress County has some of the most affordable land in Tennessee — and the kind of wilderness access you’d pay ten times more for anywhere else.
