Tips for First-Timers & Veterans

Hard-earned wisdom from locals who’ve done this every year.

🌅

Go Early, Go Thursday

Thursday morning is when dealers are out and items haven’t been picked over. Weekend crowds are fun but the best stuff goes fast.

💵

Cash Is King

Bring small bills — ones, fives, tens. Most vendors don’t take cards, and ATMs in Jamestown fill up fast during the sale weekend.

🚗

Drive Slow, Stop Often

Speed limits drop on 127 during the sale. Expect stop-and-go near Jamestown and Clarkrange. That’s not a bug — it’s the feature.

🎒

Pack for the Plateau

August on the Cumberland Plateau means heat and afternoon thunderstorms. Sunscreen, a light rain layer, water, and good shoes.

🏨

Book Lodging NOW

Cabins and Airbnbs within 30 miles of Jamestown book out months in advance. Reserve early or base from Crossville or Albany, KY.

🗺️

Don’t Rely on GPS

Grab a printable map from 127yardsale.com before you go. Rural cell service gets spotty and GPS can go sideways fast out here.

🥘

Eat Local

Jamestown restaurants fill up during the sale. Eat early or late — and keep an eye out for food vendors set up along the route itself.

The Story Behind the Sale

How a 690-Mile Yard Sale Was Born

“Slow down. Take the scenic route. Stop and meet your neighbors.”

In 1987, a man named Mike Walker had a simple idea: instead of people racing down the interstate, what if they slowed down and took the old US-127 corridor through the heart of rural America? His goal was to drive economic activity into small towns bypassed by the highway — and remind people there’s treasure in their neighbors’ barns.

The first 127 Yard Sale stretched just a few hundred miles. Today it covers 690 miles through six states — Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama — drawing hundreds of thousands of shoppers each August. It’s been featured on the Today Show, in USA Today, and in travel guides worldwide as one of America’s great road trip events.

Fentress County isn’t just on the route — Jamestown is one of its spiritual homes. Local families set up in their yards, established vendors claim their spots for the season, and the whole stretch of York Highway between Jamestown and Clarkrange becomes a festive, rolling marketplace unlike anything else in Tennessee.

In 2026, the 127 Yard Sale turns 40 — and Fentress County intends to celebrate. Mark your calendar: August 6–9, 2026.
