Whitewater & FlatwaterThe Paddling Guide
Navigate the sheer sandstone gorge. From legendary Class II-IV whitewater rapids to serene multi-day wilderness floats on one of the finest free-flowing rivers in the East.
The Grand Canyonof the East
The Big South Fork of the Cumberland River carves deeply through the plateau, creating a spectacular sandstone gorge. Because the river is free-flowing (not dam-controlled), the paddling experience changes entirely based on recent rainfall.
At high water, the gorge becomes a raging, massive volume run for expert kayakers. At medium flows, it offers thrilling Class III-IV whitewater for experienced rafters and boaters. At low summer flows, the upper and lower sections transform into peaceful, crystal-clear flatwater floats perfect for canoes and recreation kayaks.
Essential Safety Rule
Never paddle the gorge without checking the CFS gauge at Leatherwood Ford. The river can flash flood quickly after plateau thunderstorms. Cell service is non-existent at river level. You are entirely on your own once you launch.
Understanding the GaugeCFS Flow Guide
The Leatherwood Ford USGS gauge determines everything. Here is what the numbers mean for the primary gorge section.
Too low for rafts. Canoes and kayaks will scrape heavily through the gorge. Focus on the upper river sections or Blue Heron flatwater instead.
The sweet spot. Excellent Class III-IV whitewater conditions for rafts and experienced kayakers. Rapids like Double Falls and Washing Machine are powerful but clear.
Massive volume. Rapids wash out into huge, chaotic wave trains and dangerous hydraulics. Expert, expedition-level paddlers only. Rescue is nearly impossible.
The Classic RunsWhere to Launch
The crown jewel of BSF whitewater. Put in at Leatherwood Ford, take out at Station Camp. Expect major rapids including Double Falls, Washing Machine, and The Boulders.
A phenomenal multi-day wilderness trip. The river widens, the rapids mellow out to fun wave trains, and you pass historic mining camps. Excellent sandbar camping.
The upper tributaries offer tighter, more technical floating through pristine forested canyons. Good for adventurous canoes at adequate flow levels.
Paddler’s Pack ListBeyond the Basics
Type III or V PFD
Required by law and common sense. The river currents in the gorge have strong undercurrents even in flatwater sections.
Whitewater Helmet
Mandatory for the Leatherwood to Station Camp run. The riverbed is entirely solid sandstone bedrock and massive boulders.
Throw Rope / Rescue Gear
If someone swims, bank access is incredibly difficult due to the sheer canyon walls. In-water rescue gear is vital.
Thermal Layers
Spring paddling often means 70-degree air but 45-degree water. Dress for the water temperature, not the air temperature.
