Twin Arches

The Largest Sandstone Arches in the Eastern United States

If you only see one natural landmark in all of Fentress County, make it the Twin Arches. These two massive sandstone arches are the largest of their kind in the entire eastern United States, and they are nothing short of jaw-dropping in person. Located in the Tennessee section of Big South Fork, the Twin Arches are one of those places that simply has to be seen to be believed.

The North Arch stands 62 feet tall with a span of 93 feet. Its companion, the South Arch, towers at 103 feet tall with a massive span of 135 feet. To put that in perspective, the South Arch alone is taller than a 10-story building. Walking beneath them — through the cool, shadowy space between arch and earth — is a genuinely humbling experience.

The Hike

The Twin Arches are accessible via two trail options. The shorter Upper Loop is just 1.2 miles round-trip from the Twin Arches Trailhead on Twin Arches Road — a quick, easy hike with steep but manageable stairs leading down to the arches. This is the best option for families with young children or visitors with limited time.

For those wanting a longer adventure, the full Twin Arches Loop covers about 5.2 miles and includes the scenic Lower Loop, which winds through beautiful hardwood forest along Station Camp Creek and past the historic Jake’s Place homesite. The loop can also be extended to include Slave Falls and Charit Creek Lodge for a full day out.

Tips for Your Visit

Arrive early in the morning for the best light and the best chance of having the arches to yourself. The stairs down to the arch floor can be slippery when wet — wear shoes with good traction. Kids absolutely love exploring under and around the arches, so bring them along. This is a spot most locals have seen but visitors almost always say they wish they’d come sooner.
