Sgt. Alvin C. York State Historic Park

Home of America’s Most Famous WWI Hero

Just 9 miles north of Jamestown in the small community of Pall Mall, you’ll find one of the most historically significant sites in all of Tennessee — the home, gristmill, and farm of Sergeant Alvin C. York, one of the most decorated American soldiers of World War I and one of the most celebrated military figures in U.S. history.

York grew up in these hills. He was born in a log cabin just a few miles from where this park now stands, and he spent most of his life in this very community. When he returned from the war a national hero, he chose to come back to Fentress County — to Pall Mall, to the Wolf River, to the same mountains and forests where he had grown up hunting and working the land.

What to See

The centerpiece of the park is York’s two-story farmhouse, which is open for guided tours. Inside, the home is preserved largely as it was during York’s lifetime, offering visitors an intimate look at what life was like for this remarkable man and his family. The visitor center — modeled after York’s General Store — features a video about York’s life and military service, along with exhibits and artifacts.

The park’s gristmill is one of its most beloved features. The Wolf River still powers the old mill, and the water cascades beautifully over a rock wall beside the structure — creating a picturesque small waterfall that is one of the most photographed spots in Fentress County. It’s a serene and historically rich scene that connects visitors to a way of life that has nearly vanished from the modern world.

A moderate half-mile trail with a suspension bridge leads through the woods to Wolf River Cemetery, where Sergeant York and his family are buried. It is a quiet, moving walk.
