Tennessee’s Hidden Gem State Park
Pickett CCC Memorial State Park is widely considered one of the most scenic and ecologically diverse state parks in all of Tennessee — and it sits right in our backyard here in Fentress County. Nestled within the 20,887-acre Pickett State Forest and adjacent to the 125,000-acre Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, Pickett offers an unmatched combination of natural wonders, outdoor recreation, and peaceful solitude.
The park was developed between 1934 and 1942 by the Civilian Conservation Corps — the same federal program that put young men to work building trails, bridges, and cabins across the country during the Great Depression. The craftsmanship of the CCC is still visible today in the stonework, rustic cabins, and hand-built infrastructure that give the park its timeless character.
What to See and Do
Pickett is packed with natural features you won’t find anywhere else in Tennessee. The park is home to several natural stone arches, rock houses (large overhanging shelters formed by centuries of erosion), and the beautiful Arch Lake — a clear, spring-fed swimming lake where visitors can swim, kayak, canoe, and fish for trout.
The park’s trail system winds through old-growth forest, past towering sandstone bluffs, and underneath dramatic rock overhangs. The Hazard Cave and Natural Bridge Trail is a local favorite, leading hikers through an area packed with geological wonders including a massive rock shelter and a natural bridge. The Hidden Passage Trail Loop is another must-do — a more challenging route that rewards you with jaw-dropping cliff views and a true sense of wilderness.
Lodging and Camping
Pickett offers both tent and RV camping at its campground, as well as a selection of rustic CCC-era cabins that are perfect for families or couples looking for a cozy retreat in the woods. The cabins book up fast, especially in fall — plan ahead if you want to spend the night here.
Getting There
Pickett State Park is located just 12 miles north of Jamestown on Highway 154. It’s an easy day trip from town, or a perfect basecamp for exploring the surrounding Big South Fork area. The park is open year-round, and admission is free.
Best Time to Visit
Spring and fall are the most beautiful times to visit Pickett. Wildflowers carpet the forest floor in April and May, while October brings a breathtaking canopy of orange, red, and gold. Summer is popular for swimming at Arch Lake. Even winter has its charms — the bare trees open up views of the cliffs and rock formations that are hidden in other seasons.
