Middle Creek Nature Trail

The Best Family Hike Near Jamestown

Not every great hike has to be strenuous. The Middle Creek Nature Trail in Big South Fork is proof of that. This easy 3.5-mile loop on the western side of the park, near the Twin Arches area, is one of the most rewarding beginner and family-friendly hikes in all of Fentress County — and it’s got the rock shelters to prove it.

The Rock Shelters

The Middle Creek trail passes by several rock shelters, two of which are truly enormous — cavernous overhangs of sandstone that are large enough to shelter dozens of people and have clearly been used for exactly that purpose throughout history. Kids are absolutely fascinated by these structures, and they provide a dramatic visual payoff for a hike that requires very little physical challenge.

The trail winds through upland hardwood forest that is stunning in fall color, with the occasional creek crossing adding a little adventure to the walk. The terrain is gentle, the trail is well-marked, and the overall experience is peaceful and immersive in the best possible way.

A Perfect Introduction to Big South Fork

If you’re bringing visitors to Fentress County for the first time and want to show them what Big South Fork is about without committing to a full-day epic hike, Middle Creek is the answer.
