Ye Ole Jail Historic Museum occupies Jamestown’s original county jail, a sandstone building constructed in 1898 that served as the county’s penal facility until 1979. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its architectural and historical significance, the building features original cells that visitors can enter and close the door on — giving a vivid and slightly eerie sense of what incarceration looked like in rural Tennessee over a century ago. Co-located with the Fentress County Chamber of Commerce, it’s a fascinating free stop in the heart of downtown Jamestown.
