Hidden Passage Trail Loop

For Those Who Want the Full Pickett Experience

If Pickett State Park’s more family-friendly trails have left you wanting something with a bit more challenge and drama, the Hidden Passage Trail Loop is the answer. This more strenuous route takes hikers along dramatic sandstone cliff lines, through passages in the rock, and to sweeping views of the surrounding plateau that make the effort completely worthwhile.

The Trail

The Hidden Passage Trail begins near the park office on Highway 154 and winds through some of the most dramatic terrain in Pickett State Park. The trail follows the top of sandstone bluffs for extended stretches, offering views down into the forested hollows below that are genuinely spectacular, particularly in fall when the canopy is ablaze with color.

The “hidden passage” section of the trail winds through a narrow slot in the sandstone rock — a tight passage that requires some sideways shuffling to navigate, and which kids (and adventurous adults) absolutely love. This geological feature alone is worth the hike.

Difficulty

The trail is rated moderate to difficult due to some steep sections and uneven rocky terrain. It is recommended for hikers who are comfortable with moderate elevation changes and rocky footing. The total distance is approximately 5 miles for the full loop. Trekking poles are helpful on the descent sections.

Getting There

The trailhead is located north of the park office on Highway 154. Parking is available near the trailhead. Pick up a park trail map from the office before starting out.
