One of Tennessee’s Most Beautiful Hidden Waterfalls
Northrup Falls is the kind of waterfall that makes you wonder how it stays so secret. Tucked inside Colditz Cove State Natural Area near the small community of Allardt in Fentress County, this 60-foot cascade is one of the most stunning waterfalls in all of Tennessee — and most people outside the county have never heard of it.
The hike in is a peaceful 1.3 miles each way through a tranquil oak-hickory forest that feels entirely untouched. The trail is well-maintained and relatively flat, making it accessible for most visitors. As you approach the cove, the forest deepens, the air cools, and the sound of rushing water begins to fill the air before the falls come into view.
The Falls
Northrup Falls pours more than 60 feet over a wide sandstone ledge into a shaded pool below. What makes this waterfall especially unique is the ability to step behind the falls — a narrow pathway along the base of the rock wall allows visitors to stand behind the curtain of water for a perspective you won’t soon forget. The rocks can be slippery, so watch your step, but it’s absolutely worth it.
The surrounding cove is also a site of ancient significance. The majestic sandstone cliffs visible near the falls were used as shelter by Woodland Period indigenous people more than 3,000 years ago, giving this place a quiet sense of history alongside its natural beauty.
