The Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area is one of the crown jewels of the entire eastern United States — and Fentress County sits right on its doorstep. Spanning over 125,000 acres across Tennessee and Kentucky, this federally protected wilderness area protects the Big South Fork of the Cumberland River and its tributaries, along with the dramatic plateau, gorge, and bluff country that surrounds it.

Managed by the National Park Service, Big South Fork is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts of every kind. With over 300 miles of multi-use trails, some of the largest natural stone arches in the eastern United States, stunning waterfalls, deep river gorges, and a diverse mix of wildlife, there is genuinely something here for everyone — from casual day hikers to hardcore backpackers, horseback riders, mountain bikers, whitewater paddlers, and anglers.

Geology and Natural Wonders

Big South Fork sits atop the Cumberland Plateau, and millions of years of water cutting through sandstone have created a landscape unlike anywhere else in Tennessee. The park contains one of the highest concentrations of natural stone arches in the entire eastern United States — including the famous Twin Arches, the largest twin sandstone arches in the East. Rock shelters, slot canyons, chimneys, and dramatic bluffs line the gorge walls throughout the park.

Wildlife

The park is home to an impressive range of wildlife including white-tailed deer, black bears, wild turkey, bobcats, otters, and a thriving elk herd that was reintroduced in recent decades. Birdwatching is exceptional here, with warblers, raptors, and migratory species passing through seasonally. The river system supports numerous native fish species, making it a popular destination for trout and smallmouth bass fishing.

Getting There

The Bandy Creek Visitor Center in Oneida serves as the main hub for the Tennessee side of the park. From Jamestown, take Highway 154 north — you’ll find trailheads for Twin Arches, Slave Falls, and the Middle Creek area along the way. The park is open year-round with no entry fee.
